high wood Posted 11 February , 2015 Share Posted 11 February , 2015 This German instruction manual for the Gewehr 98 was amongst the effects of L/Cpl P H Perry, 126th Coy, R.E. whose papers I have in my archive. It was presumably kept as a souvenir and was probably taken from a P.O.W. or possibly found in a captured dugout during clearance operations. It appears to have been torn in half, possibly by the original owner. There are some other interesting items amongst L/Cpl Perry's effects including the instructions for erecting a Mark 1 Nissen Bow hut, details of the Fuze, percussion, "allwins" No 146; and various railway passes. More.

trajan Posted 12 February , 2015 Share Posted 12 February , 2015 The luminous sight was introduced to remedy the problems of sighting and firing rifles at dusk and early dawn. They seem to have been quite common as rear-guard units received over 300,000 of them in January 1918. See Storz, M98 Rifle and Carbine, 290-292, for a good if short discussion (from whence this information). Trajan
