Remembered Today:

M 98 Rifle and Carbine

No, not a review... I have only just skimmed this 464 page and 3 kg. tome, but it is full of all sorts of fascinating detail even for a non-rifle chappie like me! I have especially enjoyed reading the sections on manufacture, service use, etc., but it certainly is not bed-time reading...

Anyone else had a look at it?

It is staring at me as I write... Saying 'Read the rest of me, not just the bayonet bits!'...

So - Rifle & Carbine 98: M98 Firearms of the German Army from 1898 to 1918, Dieter Storz, Verlag Militaria (2006), ISBN-10: 390252605X; ISBN-13: 978-3902526052

If you can do German, you can get it through the German version of a certain site, or (am I allowed to say this?) ABE, or others - these are much cheaper than the UK or US version of a web-site that begins with an AM..,.

OK, the book... Well, I am not joking - it is not exactly bedtime reading (weighs 3+ kg and 300+ pages!), but even as a non-rifle person I enjoyed its information, albeit sometimes in rather idiosyncratic English. IF I could prop it up in bed, I would read it then - even including the bits on trench periscopes!

Here is a publisher's link to the English version.

Thanks Cockney,

Like I said I am not a rifle buff - but this is an interesting book - and at the price is a real bargain!

You have no idea how tough this is with this publisher. An Austrian fellow that puts out a tremendous product but sometimes the people that advise him on language usage.....

Too true, Joe... I am used to idiosyncratic English as I work in a Turkish university, but there is such a thing as - (A) use (and pay for!) a specialist to check the translation; and (B), if in doubt, try spell-and grammar check! BUT, it is overall an excellent work!

PS: I'll be back on the matter of those photographs and ID's anon...!
