When I read the MGC war diary for 1st battalion MGC it gave his location as EPS training. Could I have got his battalion wrong
johnboy Posted 5 February , 2015 Share Posted 5 February , 2015 Can be confusing. From my reading of it he was Guards MGC. http://www.1914-1918.net/lifeguards.htm
Phil Evans Posted 5 February , 2015 Share Posted 5 February , 2015 Where exactly on the page are you looking Amanda? I agree with Johnboy - Machine Gun Guards. The entry for 11.9.18 refers to 1 Convalescent Depot - is that what you were looking at? Phil
amanda.oconnor1 Posted 5 February , 2015 Author Share Posted 5 February , 2015 Thanks John. Any suggestion as to which war diary I need to look at to find where John was when he was gassed. The link does not say much about where they where in August 1918. Phil I had posted on here asking for help in transcribing the above mentioned post. The reply I received read Joined Machine Gun Corps Base Depot 24?12.17 Joined Battalion : in the field : 13.3.18 Joined No.1 Company : in the field :14.3.18 Wounded Gas : in the field : 23.8.18 Admitted 3rd Field Ambulance Gas Shell wound : in the field : 23.8.18 Admitted 3rd Canadian Casualty Clearing Station : in the field : 24.8.18 Admitted 13th General Hospital Boulogne : 26.8.18 Admitted No.1 Convalescent Depot Boulogne : 11.9.18 ??? : 28.9.18 ??? : 4.9.18 Leave to UK : 17.10.18 to 31.10.18 From Base : 12.11.18 Tranferred to Home Station : 28? Phil Evans Posted 5 February , 2015 Share Posted 5 February , 2015 Got it. My thought is that he was in 1 Company, 4th Battalion, Guards Machine Gun Regiment, which, I believe, would be WO 95/1206/1 But please ask for an educated opinion, before taking my word for it. Admin kenf48 Posted 5 February , 2015 Admin Share Posted 5 February , 2015 Admitted 3 Field Ambulance (Guards Division) 23 August at the 2nd Battle of Bapaume (21 August - 3 September 1918). The Germans counter attacked on the 22nd which was beaten off and on the 23rd the British attacked on a wider front so fierce fighting especially in the initial phase. His discharge document shows 4th Battalion the war diary is here http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C7351822 according to LLT they were Divisional Troops Previously served in Coldstream Guards mobilized 8th February 1917, transferred to MG Guards 29/9/1917 Ken (not educated posts just crossed!) amanda.oconnor1 Posted 6 February , 2015 Author Share Posted 6 February , 2015 Thank you all for your input on this subject. I am very new to researching the Great War and the military jargon has me baffled.
