alanec Posted 3 February , 2015 Share Posted 3 February , 2015 Remembering today the one hundredth anniversary of the death of my Great Uncle George Henry Cook who was killed during fighting at the Battle of Messines on the morning of 3rd February 1915. George served with the 1st Battalion East Surrey Regiment and was only 19 years when he lost his life in the mud of East Flanders (Oost-Vlaaneren) Belgium. Whilst we may not have known you or have no picture of you, to touch your name in stone is to be closer now than ever and before. We are so very proud of the sacrifice you made for us all. His name lies on Panel 34 of the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres along with all those brave men, (friends and colleagues) who so sadly fell beside him. As time passes by, memories of you will never die. Sleep well Great Uncle.....sleep sound.
