Guest bonza Posted 6 November , 2004 Share Posted 6 November , 2004 G'day "On this day fighting was near Klein Zillebeke" I have a reference to troops being located at Zillebeke Bund on the eve of the Battle of Menin Road in 1917. Could some-one explain "Klein" & "Bund" please Pat
bkristof Posted 6 November , 2004 Share Posted 6 November , 2004 Klein Zillebeke means LITTLE Zillebeke, that is a placed to the south east of Zillebeke village. I don't know about Bund...
Malcolm Posted 6 November , 2004 Share Posted 6 November , 2004 A bund is a small low walled enclosure usually surrounding some liquid storage and there to stop leaks spreading. Fuel and chemical stores usually have them. In this case I think it means the retaining walls of the Zillebeke reservoir. Aye Malcolm
Guest bonza Posted 6 November , 2004 Share Posted 6 November , 2004 (edited) G'day Kris, Malcolm. One has to be impressed! Instant answers! Thanks again Pat The Reservoir answer seems most likely. There are still underground 'warehouses' near the Chateau, and I recall the Tunnellers excavating underground billets for Menin Rd & associated Battles but could not pin-point their location.
