Guest julian blyton Posted 5 November , 2004 Share Posted 5 November , 2004 WILLIAM HIGO was my g/grandad. I know he fought in France, but I don't know his regiment, rank etc. I mention Thiepval, because I'm sure I went there on a school trip when I was about 13. I remember standing in a huge memorial leafing through some huge books, (and trying to read all the names on the walls at the same time)! Even though the surname is unusual I didn't think I would find any details for him, but I did! And guess what? I never wrote them down. All I know is that he died a few years after the war had ended, and was buried in Sheffield. I don't even know how old he was. I've been on god only know how many websites to try and find out more about my g/grandad, and I have had no success whatsoever. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd be really grateful. Terry Denham Posted 5 November , 2004 Share Posted 5 November , 2004 You would have been leafing through the memorial registers which are still kept in bronze boxes at the memorial. However, these are only the names of those who died and have no known grave - not your g/grandfather obviously. Have you searched for his Medal Index Card http://www.documentsonline.nationalarchive...owse-refine.asp Also - click on 'The Long Long Trail' at the top left of this page and look at 'Grandads War'. Good luck.
