Hi all,

Would anyone have the war diary for the 2/5th KLR for the month of November 1917....or at least maybe the dates of the 10th to the 16th Nov?

Any help most welcome.

Thanks

Russ.

I'm a bit confused as to why there would be 9 days missing from the War Diary the 7th to the 15th November theres no entries, i no it say's marched to Billet on the 6th, is this why no entries have been added?...which brings me to wonder how my Great Grandfather would have been wounded (Gassed) and sent home on the 15th November.

any ideas anyone?

Attached is the date showing when Harry was sent home after being wounded (15/11/17) arriving back in the UK on the 16th.

Morning Russ

Who are you looking at ??

I see from the history that they went into the line on 27th October for a few days, what does the diary say about that. If you have his service record, does it not indicate a date of wounding ??

Regards,

Graeme

Hi Graeme,

My Great Grandfather, Harry Billington, 4069 or 201632, im going to attach a copy of the date you indicate, its a bit tricky to read.

Yes i do have Harry's service doc's but most are in bad condition, i'll attach the medical ones or ones with dates referring to November see if you can make

any sense of them.

Thanks Graeme.

Russ

Hi

Is the record on Ancestry cos Im struggling finding it ? Do you have a link ?

Is there a page, usually the one in your #5 post, which has a date of wounding ?

From what I can see he was invalided home on 16 November so was obviously wounded prior to that. The battalion seems to have encountered quite a bit of shelling

in October and early November so he could have been wounded at any time during these dates,

Regards,

Graeme

Hi Graeme,

Yes his doc's are on Ancestry, my membership has just run out and need to renew, but the link is:

http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?rank=1&new=1&MSAV=1&gss=angs-c&gsfn=harry&gsfn_x=NN&gsln=billington&msbdy=1895&msbpn__ftp=Everton%2c+Lancashire%2c+England&msddy=1966&msrpn__ftp=47+Burleigh+Road+South&msidy=1915&cpxt=0&uidh=ek4&msbdp=1&msidd=12&msidm=7&cp=11&pcat=39&h=91087&db=BritishArmyService&indiv=1&ml_rpos=25

There is another casualty form, but only the section with his name and details are readable, if there was any info on the bottom section it's been so badly water damaged it's no longer visible.

I think i've been just thinking that after he was wounded he would have been sent home within a few days, i guess this is a little naive and he could have spent more time in a field hospital?

Attached the casualty form i mentioned above.

I do no he was sent to Queen Mary's Hospital in Whalley Lancs, maybe thats an avenue i could explore for dates if any exist.

Hi Russ

The war diary in post 4 says W.A. Kenneth and 11 other ranks were wounded on 2/11/17.

The date 1-2/11/17 says "very heavy gas shelling during the night".

I think this might be the date he was gassed as it is the only gas attack I can see in this month.

Hi Colin,

I think you and Graeme are right, having read the hole diary as best i can, thats all i can see also, i was just taking for granted that he would have been wounded closer to the dates of being shipped home

a rather presumptuous mistake on my part!

Still mooching !!

Regards,

Graeme

Nothing else, at least you now have his date of birth and his Company. In short, if someone is wounded it is very difficult to tie down an exact date.

Hi Graeme,

Yes, he was with the 1st Battalion by end March start of April and as you have seen was listed as missing on the 16th April while at Line Boisleux-Au-Mount, I think the 2/5th was dispanded while he would have still be at home in the UK recovering.

Take a look at this guys, i've touched up the doc in photoshop.

I cant make out any of the first line, but there is a date on there, the rest looks like:

Has cough, pain in back, is deaf?? burning sensation in throat.

Then something? eyes - negative

Superficial burn of right thigh.

19/12/17 something? Healed

14/12/17 Discharged something??
