RodB Posted 11 December , 2014 Share Posted 11 December , 2014 Anybody know what the expected maximum and sustained rate of aimed fire was for British Regular rifleman in 1914 ? I keep reading that every Tommy could pump out 15-20 rounds per minute and elsewhere I read that this was merely the maximum possible achieved by a few elite marksmen. Which makes sense, as I read elsewhere again that at maximum possible rates of fire the SMLE became too hot to handle. So in reality, at Mons, what was the actual maximum and sustained aimed rate of fire of the average Regular ? And what was expected in training ? PS : is it generally accepted here that "the Germans believed they were mowed down by machine-guns rather than rifle fire at Mons" is a myth ? thanks Rod
