delta Posted 1 November , 2004 Share Posted 1 November , 2004 Could a kind pal point me in the direction of a history of the action around Vimy Ridge before the French attacks in May 1915; ie when the Germans first took the ground, how they manned the area and the nature of the defences they built. The histories I have only refer to the 1917 actions but that is possibly because I am seeing the Western Front through the eyes of those who concentrate on the BEF. Robert Dunlop Posted 1 November , 2004 Share Posted 1 November , 2004 There is a nice article entitled 'Artois 1915' by Douglas Porch in 'The Great War' edited by Robert Cowley (ISBN 1 8441 3419 9) Robert
Landsturm Posted 1 November , 2004 Share Posted 1 November , 2004 You might want to check these ones out: L’offensive en Artois - en mai et juin 1915 Attaque du «Labyrinthe» du 26e régiment d’infanterie Yes, I know, they`re in French, but this site has helped me with MANY problems conserning the French army actions. If you don`t understand anything, use translators (Internet is full of them, for example Freetranslation.com or Babel Fish-Altavista.
Landsturm Posted 1 November , 2004 Share Posted 1 November , 2004 Ahhh... even better: La reprise de l’offensive -fin 1914-début 1915: L’offensive de la 10e armée en Artois
Robert Dunlop Posted 2 November , 2004 Share Posted 2 November , 2004 What a fabulous web site. The parent site http://perso.wanadoo.fr/chtimiste/ gives lists of French regiments, the actions in which they fought, the major battles/campaigns (including Artois), and lots of photographs. Thanks for the heads-up on this one, Landsturm. Robert
