bartbandyrfc Posted 28 December , 2004 Share Posted 28 December , 2004 kingsnorth36, Just guessing, but maybe he was kiled in a flying accident whilst undergoing training. This from the CWGC Website. Cemetery: VENDOME TOWN CEMETERY Country: France Locality: Loire-et-Cher Location Information: Vendome is a town situated 80 kilometres south-west of Chartres. The Cemetery is at the junction of Rue du Vingtieme Chasseurs and Rue de la Tuillerie. Take the route to Chartres from town and turn left at the first set of lights after the railway crossing. The graves are in the right hand corner by the war memorial in the French Military Plot. Historical Information: A Flying School was opened by the R. N. A. S. at Vendome in November, 1916, and gradually expanded; the choice of the site was dictated by the fact that the winter weather in Central France is more suitable for flying training than it is in England. There are now over 20, 1914-18 war casualties commemorated in this site. No. of Identified Casualties: 22 Cheers,
Northern Soul Posted 29 December , 2004 Share Posted 29 December , 2004 Suggest you move the thread to "The War in the Air." 'Dolphin' et al will almost certainly have the details you are after.
Dolphin Posted 30 December , 2004 Share Posted 30 December , 2004 At the Armistice, the 84th Wing RAF, comprising Nos 205 and 212 Training Depot Stations, and an Aerodrome Service Unit, was based at Vendome. I think that it's likely that, if he met his death in the air, 2Lt McElhinney was killed in a flying training accident. Unfortunately, there's not a great deal of information around on post-Armistice RAF casualties. Regards Gareth
