Cambs 20 nursing corps

One of my Granny's aunts was in the above nursing corps, based at Shepreth in Cambridgeshire and founded by "local" worthy Amy Webber - aunt of late Liberal Leader Jo Grimond.

Anyone know any more?

P.S. Worth a smile - her daughter joined it when it was revived in WW2 and the first casualty she had to patch up was on the first night the siren sounded in a blacked-out Cambridge. A woman had been rushing to get home to her mother and cycled into a lamppost! Just makes you think, with so much light around at night nowadays...

In 1909 it was decided to form Voluntary Aid Detachments (VADs) to provide medical assistance in time of war. By the summer of 1914 there were over 2,500 Voluntary Aid Detachments in Britain. Of the 74,000 VADs in 1914, two-thirds were women and girls.

The detachments were numbered within their county e.g. VAD 13 Wiltshire.

It is likely that you granny's aunt served in VAD 20 Cambridgeshire.

and just a little extra to the excellent summary the VADs were formed from personnel of approved societies (British Red Cross, St Johns Ambulance, St.Andrews Ambulance etc)

Odd numbers were allotted to mens detachments and even numbers to womens so the existence of say a 38th detachment does not mean there were 37 others. This was to help movements and billeting officers to make appropriate arrangements.
