Can any person identify the position of this mine crater .....oops I have given a clue.

All I can say is ..... 1916, Somme.

Have a go, it is free to enter.

No... it is not the Lochnager crater

Sorry egbert, it is not that either.

However, I have placed another view showing a bit more trench. I have also rotated the picture which as you can see gives the crater more of a concave appearance.

I think someone will get it now.

I have also other clues, such as the Tunneling Coy responsible and the date it was blown. But that would make it too easy.

Yes it is the mine blown at the eastern corner of High Wood on 3 September, 1916, at the position of a German strong-point. The shaft was dug by the 178 Tunneling Coy, RE and the charge was 3,000 lbs of ammonal.

A second charge was blown a few days later.

Do you know the altitude of the aircraft taking the picture? It seems exceedingly high for an aircraft of the time.

Spotter Balloon Possibly?
