roguegrafix Posted 6 November , 2014 Share Posted 6 November , 2014 Researching a distant relative and discovered he had joined 4th Squadron 4th Remount Unit which appears to have served in Egypt. Is this a separate unit or is part of the Australian Light Horse? Perhaps someone could point me to a web page with more information about this unit. Many thanks, Steve
Blackblue Posted 6 November , 2014 Share Posted 6 November , 2014 There were initially 4 Squadrons in the Australian Remount Depot in Egypt. I understand it was originally formed from the 1st and 2nd Remount Units, which had embarked from Australia for the purpose of remount duty. I don't believe there were ever more than two distinct Australian units, usually just the Australian Remount Depot, which these units became part of when they reached Egypt. It was reportedly originally formed to look after Light Horses mounts when they went off to fight dismounted at Gallipoli. Later managed remounts for the Light Horse in the Sinai and Palestine, but also horses and mules for other theatres such as Salonika. They were not part of the Light Horse, but formed part of the broader British Army remount system. There is a bit of a history at the front of the War Diary here: http://www.awm.gov.au/collection/AWM4/28/1/ Rgds Tim D
