After returning from Belgium and finding s great great uncle in France I am hoping for some help and guidance on finding out more about him. Frank Fairman (31326)died 23rd April 1916 he is listed as a rifleman in the 11th battalion and is buried at Wimereux communal cemetery, the plaque states that the area had a medical centre and that the unfortunate were buried at said cemetery. He would I believe have been in action in this area and would appreciate any help in finding out more about where he may have been wounded or pointed in the direction to find out more.Thanks.

Frank died of wounds in a hospital at Wimereux - miles away from where he was wounded with the 11th Bn. Rifle Brigade.

He may have received his wounds days or weeks previously.

The Battalion war diary for this period has been digitised and can be downloaded here for £3.30 :

His service record is on Ancestry. It mentions a Court of Enquiry held on 13.04.16 involving several men, of which one was Frank Fairfield.

The record states 'DIED OF WOUNDS RECEIVED ACCIDENTALLY' and that he was buried in Avesnes-Le-Comte Cemetery.

He was injured on the 13th, transferred to a casualty clearing station on the 14th and taken to Wimereux on the 16th. Gun Shot Wound to leg.

He was wounded on 13/4/16 accidentally with 8 others and 1 accidentally killed.

Battalion diary has the 11th RB involved in working parties.
