may well depend on the unit for starters - who is he and what unit ? do you know when awarded ?

local papers and the war diary are good sources

Even though my granddad had to wait 22 years after demob in 1919, there is still a medal card for him in the MICs.

Hi Coldstreamer

Thanks for replying, the chap in question is George Alexander Ross Pte 11439 RAMC, the award was Gazetted on 11/2/19 and was awarded for something that happened in East Africa. I meet Georges son in the summer at a Church service held in memory of the men form Ireland who served in the war and returned home. He has little info on his Dad, the original medals were stolen many years ago and I'm just trying to see what I can piece together for him. Given the situation in Ireland C1919, there is unlikely to be anything in the local papers.

Regards

IanC
