elewis Posted 27 September , 2014 Share Posted 27 September , 2014 This is an excellent site that contains pictures and transcriptions of a very large number of War Memorials in Cheshire, also a fair bit of other stuff about the county. It also has an index of surnames and what memorial they are on. http://www.carlscam.com/ Among the memorial it details the Great Western Railway memorial that is found in the Chester Railway station, this RoH is not unique to Chester and I know of another surviving copy on the heritage Dean Forest Railway at Lydney. This lists all the 2,524 GWR men killed in the Great War broken down by department and location. So if you knew a man worked on the railway but no more this could well provide extra information. FYI: The number of Great Western men who joined His Majesty's Forces was 25,479, representing thirty-three per cent of the Company's staff. Those who gave their lives in the war numbered 2,524. http://www.carlscam.com/chester/gwrmem.htm

It's a number of years since I contacted Carl and his email is not in my address book. But, from a vague memory, I think it may be carl@carlscam.com
