Quarry Cemetery in Vermelles

Recommended Posts

Hello

I really want to visit the Quarry Cemetery in Vermelles to pay my respects to a

Great, Great Uncle who died at the Battle of Loos in October 1915.

Has anyone else visited the cemetery and if so could you please let me have some

information on the best way to get there, where to stay etc..

Vermelles is a village and commune in the mining district of the Pas-de-Calais, mid-way between Bethune and Lens.

Thanks & Regards

Sharon

Hello Sharon

Quarry Cemetery is actually more easily visited from Auchy les Mines, which you will see on your map is NE of Vermelles.

Best place to stay is Arras. Plenty of hotels, restaurants etc there. Very few in the Loos area.

Hi Sharon

It depends what kind of level of comfort you want. My husband goes to Loos every September and stays in the formula 1 hotel, which is basic but OK. There is a campanile hotel nearer Lens, and a 3 * hotel in the Centre Commercial de Lens on hill 70.

The Cemetery is easier to get to than it used to be, there is a track from the Vermelles- Auchy les Mines rd which takes you directly there, look for the CWGC green sign.

There is s theory that Capt Fergus Bowes Lyon is buried in the Cemetery.

It is s fascinating place, Loos isn't as well vivited as the Somme or the Salient, but there is plenty to see.

Please feel free to mail me off forum if you want.

Regards  , Michelle
