berniehudson Posted 26 August , 2014 Share Posted 26 August , 2014 Hello I came across this posted on a business's blog. The report is from the Lytham Road area in Blackpool "World War One Heritage in Blackpool We here in the office have learnt something new, we have recently found out that just round the corner from our showroom there was a trench replica used to train troops before they were deployed. The replica trench system spanned almost two miles! After the soldiers were deployed the trenches were open to the public as a tourist attraction, manned by injured soldiers who returned home, all proceeds being given to the care of the wounded troops at a local hospital near Blackpool Airport. The trenches were filled after the armistice but work has recently begun to excavate them after almost 90 years! Over 100 amateur archeologists signed up as volunteers to help with the excavation, a real community effort! Although these trenches werent used for battle, it brings the WW1 a lot closer to home to know that recruits were marching just down the street from us before they were sent to battle."
