Remembered Today:

Clasp & Rose

Pals,

I have been advised conflicting information on the matter of the Clasp and Rose for the 14 Star. Don't worry - I am not after the definition of under fire, sound of guns etc !!!

My questions are:

1) Did the C&R have to be specifically applied for ? I have a Trio for a 15 Casualty who was a pre-war regular. He was in the 1st Beds and his MIC does not mention the C&R. If not applied for by his NOK, then it wouldn't be recorded on his MIC would it/wouldn't it ??

2) Are the records available for who actually were awarded them ?

Other than the MIC is there any other means of confirmation ?

Many thanks in advance...........

1. C & R had to be applied for and approved.

2. It is recorded on the MIC, 1914 Star medal & discharge paper only roll only.

One of the rules for admission to the old contmeptibles association is that the award of the 14 Star & clasp was entered on the soldier's discharge paper and soldiers often wrote back to the WO for revisions (ref Pte W Suter WO 363/S3333).

I will scan his letter for info.

Ian,

Many thanks for the explanation. I would hazard a gues that in this case, the NOK didn't apply for the C&R - but I will have to undertake further research.

I have just persuaded the Other Half to get me Williamson's Tomes for my birthday, and will be intrigued to see what these contain on this matter.

Thanks for your help............
