I have been trying to find a William Griffiths who was and officer and an RFC/RAF observer and have found this MIC which mentions an RAMC private 66008, who was commissioned in to 13th JG RAF on 6 March 1918 (however the RAF did not exist until 1 April 1918). is this the RAF or a branch of the Army called RAF

HI

You have to remember the medal cards were written after the war for the pairs, so RAF would have the term used then. The other thing to remember is that people are writing these, errors to occur! But it would mean Royal Air Force, I am not aware of any army unit with that designation.

regards

Robert

His RAF file is AIR 76/198/8 with DOB of 8.6.1895 and name William Cross Griffiths

The medal card is WO 372/8/159036 with name given as William Crew Griffiths, ex RAMC 66008 Pte

There is also another AIR 76 file for a 'W.C. Griffiths': AIR 76/198/9
