I suppose you could say that our TEL and this fellow worked in the same field though not in the same country.

Is he Max von Oppenheim?

Three (at least) to identify here. (If you get one of them, you will know the others).

I'm very tempted to jump in here

but I would be cheating

as I have the battalion history

where only one is un-named.

Yes, in my source this chap is "unknown".

If I may be so bold; that is not cheating. I would call it being tooled- up for the job.

I have no idea who the subjects are, but the mystery chap seems like it might be an interesting diversion?

So, three chaps to identify.

Memo to sJ - there is a Naval connection;

memo to nf - one of the three was awarded the VC;

memo to Ron - one of the three was a poet.

Would the poet be Rubert Brooke?

Same btn as Freyburg?

Who else in particular are we looking for?

The third chap I had in mind was awarded the DSO and two bars, and became a Brigadier General. He was the son of one of the Great and Good of the Great War.

(The chap sat second right is Lieutenant the Honourable Maurice Henry Nelson Hood, son of Arthur Wellington Alexander Nelson Hood, 2nd Viscount Bridport. He was killed in action in June 1915. But he is not the chap we're looking for.)

I've found one "Ock" Asquith, who served with the btn. He joined the Hood Battalion as a sublieutenant, rising to Brigadier General. Awarded DSO with two bars.

Two more "celebs" from the Hood btn. Don't know whether or not they feature in your picture:

Arthur Asquith might be number three.

(No VC in the pic, just in the clues. Before the vc action).

oops - a bit too late, the latest answers did not show up for me before posting!

They are Patrick Shaw-Stewart, and Fred Kelly. I think Fred Kelly might be our "unknown" officer - more soon.

The Hood Battalion photograph in post No.6988 is dated February 1915

but since the left above in post No 7004 is not to be seen in it,

then we might deduce that it was taken sometime before Tuesday 23rd Feb 1915 when he joined that battalion (?)

One of my own favourite characters appears in the original battalion photograph

599dc83503e5e_HoodBattalionatBlandfordFeb1915crop2.jpg.465e8e210fc70e17e5dcd431c5fdcb28.jpg

He got the DSC on V Beach 25/26 April 1915 while still technically not British but an American

and in the next innings took part in The Great Escape
