michaeldr Posted 23 August , 2017 Share Posted 23 August , 2017 I'm very tempted to jump in here but I would be cheating as I have the battalion history where only one is un-named.

If I may be so bold; that is not cheating. I would call it being tooled- up for the job. I have no idea who the subjects are, but the mystery chap seems like it might be an interesting diversion? Uncle George Posted 23 August , 2017 Share Posted 23 August , 2017 So, three chaps to identify. Memo to sJ - there is a Naval connection; memo to nf - one of the three was awarded the VC; memo to Ron - one of the three was a poet.

The third chap I had in mind was awarded the DSO and two bars, and became a Brigadier General. He was the son of one of the Great and Good of the Great War. (The chap sat second right is Lieutenant the Honourable Maurice Henry Nelson Hood, son of Arthur Wellington Alexander Nelson Hood, 2nd Viscount Bridport. He was killed in action in June 1915. But he is not the chap we're looking for.)

michaeldr Posted 23 August , 2017 Share Posted 23 August , 2017 The Hood Battalion photograph in post No.6988 is dated February 1915 but since the left above in post No 7004 is not to be seen in it, then we might deduce that it was taken sometime before Tuesday 23rd Feb 1915 when he joined that battalion (?) One of my own favourite characters appears in the original battalion photograph He got the DSC on V Beach 25/26 April 1915 while still technically not British but an American and in the next innings took part in The Great Escape
