Khaki Posted 12 July , 2014 Share Posted 12 July , 2014 The Lebel bayonet of France was given the name 'Rosalie' after a popular 1914 song, were any other bayonets so honored with a name ? khaki.
trajan Posted 12 July , 2014 Share Posted 12 July , 2014 Short of the 'They don't like it up 'em' of the P.1907 I can't think of one! IIRC, there is a poem, though, about the P.1888, but only attributable to the P.1888 because of its date... And according to Wiki, Botrel, who wrote the Rosalie, also wrote Ma P'tite Mimi about a machine-gun... Added to which there is this little number... http://war-poets.blogspot.com.tr/2012/11/the-erotic-poetry-of-bayonet.html (Hmmmm.... That word 'erotic' in the full version of the link should get the MOD's looking in...!) Trajan
Stoppage Drill Posted 13 July , 2014 Share Posted 13 July , 2014 The Enfield No4 socket spike was often called "Pigsticker." As ever, the French win on grounds of elegance . . . .
Michael Haselgrove Posted 13 July , 2014 Share Posted 13 July , 2014 Khaki, There are one or two other French names for the bayonet to be found on this excellent site on the subject of slang generally. Well worth a read: http://www.firstworldwar.com/features/slang.htm Regards, Michael.

trajan Posted 26 July , 2014 Share Posted 26 July , 2014 If you want to check out the poem about the P.1888, then go to: http://angloboerwarmuseum.com/Boer20c_tech_bayo.html I normally use Chrome, and for some reason this web-page won't scroll down with that but it does when using Firefox...
