Remembered Today:

Identify German Shell Casing

War13Memorial

Recommended Posts

I have been recently handed in a brass shell casing for an Exhibition we are holding in August

Polte

Mai 1917

Magdeburg

The other marks on the base are

121 (above Polte)

and SP406 below Magdeburg

I appreciate that it is German made in Magdeburg by Polte and dated May 1917. It is the other 2 marks I don't know.

The shell casing is 22.5cms high and with a diameter of 22cms (pretty heavy)

Can anyone please tell me which gun this shell was for and will I easily find a photograph of it.on line ?.

many thanks

Billy

If it looks like a brass shoe for an elephant then its probably a 21cm Morser case. Mine has the same dimensions.

A quick search for 'ww1 21cm morser' should throw up plenty of images and a Wikipedia entry.
