Seadog Posted 28 June , 2014 Share Posted 28 June , 2014 The first war memorial in Watchet, West Somerset was unveiled today. BBC Report http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-somerset-28061252 Memorial Project http://www.watchetremembranceproject.co.uk/ The Watchet RBL and townspeople were kind enough to support the Bristol Merchant Navy Memorial by their generosity and I congratulate all those involved with the new memorial. maxi Posted 28 June , 2014 Share Posted 28 June , 2014 Well done to the good people of Watchet. A nice, simple and poignant memorial which I intend to go and see when I am down in Somerset in August. Thank you for the post Seadog. Maxi
Seadog Posted 28 June , 2014 Author Share Posted 28 June , 2014 I am also very much looking forward to seeing this shortly as it looks well worth a visit. The cost of these memorials is amazing as even this one required £16,000 according to the BBC. The Bristol Merchant Navy Memorial I have mentioned commemorates all MN seafarers who served in both war and peace and also records those Bristol ships lost in WW1/WW2 and cost £150,000 to complete. Seadog Posted 1 July , 2014 Author Share Posted 1 July , 2014 The recently dedicated new memorial in this little West Somerset Town. Located at the very end of the esplanade and facing the West Somerset Railway. A really excellent memorial with the cross resting on a pile of sandbags. There is more info attached to the wall next to the memorial and also a small but very interesting exhibition of medals etc in the museum where entry is free. If you are in the vicinity I strongly recommend a visit.
