Hello everyone

Can anyone tell me the circumstances behind the loss of Lieutenant (Pilot) William Stobart, of 29 Sqn and 10 Bn Durham Light Infantry, who was killed on August 24th 1916, aged 21? He is buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Poperinge.

Many thanks,

Regards

Simon

He crashed on takeoff for southern patrol due to an error of judgement flying DH.2 7872

He only became a Flying Officer on 23.6.16

Previously he was wounded on 3.7.16 flying DH.2 6009 on patrol St Eloi-Picanton

He survived a crash on takeoff for patrol on 17.8.16 in DH.2 5947

And again in 7917 on 19.8.16 when his engine failed and he force-landed west of Westoutre on patrol

Good afternoon Simon

Can I please ask the reason for your interest in Lt William Stobart?

Cheers

Dave

Hello Dave

Apologies for not replying sooner, but I'd not had a notification of a reply to my thread.

The short answer is - I can't really remember...! I'm researching airmen from the North East of England, and maybe the DLI connection made me look him up. Something obviously made me ask on here in 2014 as I've got him mentioned briefly in my files, but I can't remember the how and why though.

I see from a family tree on ancestry.co.uk that his father was oringinally from Sunderland, though, which may explain why he joined the DLI?

Regards

Simon

Ok Simon no worries. The reason I asked was that I am actually in possession of a set of binoculars owned by William Stobart which I rescued from a house reclamation place.

As a veteran myself of the RAF I have an interest in military history and with his RFC links I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to get them.

I have added a few pictures for your interest from which you can see inscriptions scratched into the body of the binoculars referring to 29Sqn, 10DLI, Ypres 1915 and Bromham Hall where his family lived.

Regards

Dave
