Guest robin miller Posted 19 October , 2004 Share Posted 19 October , 2004 Cant produce a photo as it wont download! But i have two photo's i believe of the same soldier in one he is wearing dress uniform of Royal Sussex Reg. But in both photo's he is wearing from top left shoulder down to waist some five leather pouches on a belt. Can anybody tell me what this is and if means any thing?? In the other photo this soldier is wear uniform of short trouser with that belt and pouches and what looks like a pith helmet at the bottom of his feet, with this uniform does that mean he may have been in Gallipoli?? bkristof Posted 19 October , 2004 Share Posted 19 October , 2004 it is a 5 pouch pattern 1903 bandoleer. Common for mounted troops, who are not part of a cavalry unit (like ASC or suply troops)
DrB Posted 19 October , 2004 Share Posted 19 October , 2004 Could be an old picture and perhaps he was in the mounted infantry unit of his regiment. DrB

KONDOA Posted 19 October , 2004 Share Posted 19 October , 2004 If he had a pith helmet he could have also been in Mesopotamia, India or East Africa to name a few possibles. It is also likely that he was somehow attached to a unit serving in India ie 1st Peshawar Division with whom the Royal Sussex had a connection. http://www.1914-1918.net/Peshawar_div.htm
DrB Posted 19 October , 2004 Share Posted 19 October , 2004 As Drake 1066 says, any of the mentioned theaters for the pith helmet. Shorts were also worn in these areas as well, but, later in the war had became de rigour, after permission from the CO, for all theaters in hot weather, including the Western Front. Edward_N_Kelly Posted 20 October , 2004 Share Posted 20 October , 2004 Were not the drivers of the battalion's baggage wagons also equipped thus (and were they were drawn from within the ranks and not from ASC) ? Cheers Edward
bkristof Posted 20 October , 2004 Share Posted 20 October , 2004 there were mixed situations, as there was no ASC enough...
mcderms Posted 20 October , 2004 Share Posted 20 October , 2004 Pith helmets were also used in Italy during the summer. I have a picture showing this.

KONDOA Posted 20 October , 2004 Share Posted 20 October , 2004 With pouches and landyard my first thoughts would be for one of the artillery formations, secondly ASC or mounted infantry which the latter may be Mesopotamia?? Chums may advise better on the latter.
