Remembered Today:

Shoulder titles

Hi all,

At Gallipoli last year I found a shoulder title depicting the number '1' in the sand at Anzac Cove.

I assume it is an early style shoulder title from the 1st Battalion (or possibly 10th, 11th or any other Battalion with a '1' in their name).

Can anyone give me a brief history of shoulder titles worn by the Aussies at Gallipoli? When were the brass titles replaced by the unit colour patches? Did soldiers continue to wear brass unit titles throughout the war?

Cheers,

Mat

It may have also been a New Zealand one. The Rifle Battalions wore the curved NZR on the shoulder with the brass Battalion number just to the top on the shoulder strap.

So it may have also been from one of the NZ provincial Coys. I have seen pictures of them being worn in this manner in Gallipoli.

Can't scan unfortionaltly.
