Remembered Today:

Hertfordshire Regiment Memorial

There is no dedicated memorial to the ‘Hertfordshires’ of the Great War in France or Belgium and the Herts At War Project *1 (www.hertsatwar.co.uk) would like to change that.

The preparatory work has been done, i.e. an official approach has been made to the Langemarck-Poelcapelle town council and the land owner, and permission has been granted, but we have yet to raise all of the funding required (£5,000 *2) but that has now started in earnest.

The proposal is simply to place a memorial to the Hertfordshire Regiment at the site of their famous and tragic attack on the village of St Julien on 31st July 1917, when of some 620 men going forward 479 were missing, killed, wounded or captured. The memorial will be dedicated not only to the casualties on that day, but to all the men of the Hertfordshire Regiment who served on the Western Front during the Great War, but especially to the 1100+ that never returned.

The plan is to unveil and dedicate the memorial on 31st July 2017, which gives us enough time to raise the money, build the memorial, organise the event and the trip to it.

Please let us know what you think of the idea on the forum or by contacting jonty.wild@hertsatwar.co.uk and if you would like to support the memorial or the project look out for fund raising events or buy a badge from the project or via eBay.

*1 The project commemorates all the men from Hertfordshire not just those who served in the Hertfordshire Regiment

*2 At the time of writing nearly £1,000 has been raised

Ah good question, it will be a substantial brick built affair I will try to get a copy of the mocked up picture. The local authorities are now being fairly proscriptive on the designs that they will allow.

Thanks,

Have you approached Herfordshire CC to see if they could do an online remembrance book. The London Borough of Islington have one online with the names of the men from within Islington area. The beauty being that it can be edited and amended at any time.
