What means UI on trench maps?

It's actually U1 - not UI - and represents 'something' located in grid square U1.

I agree with directional photography or observation points. Sentry or sniper maybe.

The markers are in 'O' grid as well, all markers very close proximity to the German trenches.

Do the markers extend along the whole of the front line trenches on the map.
