Remembered Today:

Medal explanation please

Hello everyone,

I wonder if someone may be able to explain something for me?

I am looking at the Medal Card for 3272 Pte George Bishop 2nd Battalion Rifle Brigade.

I see that the Medal card says:

1914 Star, Clasps and what appears to say 'Roses' issued I.V. 3605/ C dg. 3. 3.20 Clasp 2/73

What does all of that mean?

Any help would be much appreciated.

thank you

Ian

Have a look at this description of 1914 Star on the Long Long Trail. The bit you want is at the bottom of the page.

The short answer is that soldiers in France and Belgium between 5 August 1914 and midnight of 22/ 23 November were entitled to the 1914 Star and those who were engaged with the enemy during this time could also claim a clasp to wear on its ribbon and a rose symbol to wear on the ribbon when the ribbon was worn alone ("Clasp & Roses").

Pleasure. No doubt you have found it for yourself but here is a link to the section on the LLT about the Rifle Brigade which shows that the 2nd Battalion's arrival at Le Havre is given as 6 November 1914 and Pte Bishop's entry into a theatre of war on the Medal Index Card is stated as 7 November 1914, which ties in nicely.
