We get lots of posters here discussing the return of medals to families. It can happen:

There was a closeup of the medal on the Irish news which showed remnants of black paint on it. Did NOK blacken stars belonging to deceased servicemen?

Hi Dave, I'm afraid I can't answer your question about next of kin blackening stars, but it is great to read about a medal being returned to a family after so long. Great story, thank you for sharing it!
