Guest allison Posted 28 May , 2014 Share Posted 28 May , 2014 Hi I wonder if anyone can give me any help with the recent information about a relative that I have stumbled across? I have Charles William Smith who was attested 11\12\15 according to the records I have but not mobilised until 3\4/18 is this commonplace? I know he was 38 on signing up and married with children. His regimental number was WR 333409 which I understand was the waterways division of the royal engineers but otherwise this is all new to me !! Can anyone help please
BillyH Posted 28 May , 2014 Share Posted 28 May , 2014 (The WR is for Waterways & Railways) You have got it just about right with the service record. It doesn't look as though the army thought he was up to it - at least medically. He never went overseas, so no medals. There is mention on his medical details of "Signs of Senility" which doesn't sound good for a 38 year old. His military character comment was not very flattering either. Sorry I couldn't offer better news! BillyH.
keithmroberts Posted 28 May , 2014 Share Posted 28 May , 2014 Delayed call up was not unusual. Quite a number of men attested, and were left to continue in the day job, only to be called up later in the war. Keith
