Locolines Posted 26 May , 2014 Share Posted 26 May , 2014 Hello, this is my first post. I thought you may like this, it's a shell case that was found at our local rubbish tip engraved on it with what looks like the wheel of a cigarette lighter is an inscription It reads.. From Ernest to mother and father. Five sons fighting... Rueben Ernest Mark Leonard Horace Ypres Vimy Pashendale 1915 1916. 1917. 1918. I wonder who they were and what happened to them. IPT Posted 26 May , 2014 Share Posted 26 May , 2014 The sons of Mark and Elizabeth Ann Emery of West Ham (1891 and 1901) and later Lymington Avenue, Leigh-on-Sea (1911) were; Mark born c1883, (possibly died 1959) Reuben born c1885, (possibly died 1962) Ernest born c1886, (possibly died 1971) Horace born c1896, (possibly died 1972) Leonard born c1900, (possibly died 1989)

IPT Posted 3 June , 2014 Share Posted 3 June , 2014 As an aside, in 1913 an Ernest Emery of Leigh-on-Sea was fined 20s plus 13s costs, or 14 days for dodging his train fare. He was a professional footballer for Southend United on his way to play Tottenham Hotspur. Times have changed.

Guest Jonkemon Posted 26 February , 2015 Share Posted 26 February , 2015 Yes, that is a pretty amazing find! To confirm though, 'Ginge' Emery the fare dodging Southend United player was my Great Grandad, not the same Ernest who put this beauty in your possession. (Different sibling names and didnt serve abroad during the war). Amazing coincidence so if anyone here knows this Ernest Emery, would be great to find out if they're related in any way?
