War Rant Posted 18 May , 2014 Share Posted 18 May , 2014 Hello, Can anyone help me with information about this artillery piece? It was used in the area around Zandvoorde before June 1917 (according to the back of the card) I was wondering about it appearing to be fixed in position. If it was spotted by the enemy, would it not have been very vulnerable? I was wondering how far back from the front these were used? Is it off a ship? Thank you! AOK4 Posted 17 June , 2014 Share Posted 17 June , 2014 That will probably be Zandvoorde near Oostende, I think it's a naval artillery piece.
centurion Posted 17 June , 2014 Share Posted 17 June , 2014 There were ten coastal batteries in the area with overlapping fields of fire Guns like the one in the photo had a range of between 6 and 12 miles so not easy to spot at that sort of distance, Before firing began smoke pots were lit along the beach so that the muzzle flashes could not be determined and used to register them.
