Remembered Today:

Late war 1907's with Regimental Marks

Hi,

Am starting a new thread to look at 1907's dated 1917 and 1918 with regimental marks. My thoughts are that most will actually be post WW1 markings on what were good bayonets staying in service after the war. Re-issue dates will point to that.

One question, if there is an old regimental mark will it always be struck out at re-issue time?

First example is a 1917 (am reposting these shots). I now think that this was stamped after the '35 reissue to Royal Engineers, Cinque Ports:

Second example is a 1918 to North Staffs using the post war abbreviation of N STAF (not N STF), probably stamped after the '33 or '38 reissues:

Third example is another 1918, May, to the Guards Machine Gun Regiment. This was formed in May 1918 and disbanded in February 1920. No reissue marks.

All 3 of these examples have throats stamped and matching the bayonets.

I'll add one to the pile. Sanderon, 11/18, no reissues, bright blade finish.

Marked to the RAF.

More pictures in the morning...

This ' Chapman ' bayonet also saw service in South Africa, as the pommel is marked with a broad arrow ' ^ ' within a ' U ' for the Union of South Africa.

msdt, nice examples with nice clear markings -and even better matching scabbard numbers! Come to think of it, though, I can't recall ever seeing a P.1907 scabbard with a serial marking on the top of the throat, although I have seen these on P.1888 and P.1903 scabbard throats.

A re=post hoping that Lancs F, Nwhite, 4th Gordons and SS might comment / add?

Trajan this pair of scabbards came to me loose. The British made one is numbered as the examples above, while the Lithgow one has a Military District and serial on the edge of the throat. Sadly I still do not have an appropriate Lithgow bayonet, but the other scabbard now adorns my quillion removed example marked to the Royal Scots Fusiliers.

Thanks! I must look again at my hidden-away 1907's and P.1917's to be sure I don't have one - but I am pretty certain that I don't...

Yes LF,

The cancelled Union of South Africa mark is interesting. As the bayonet ended in British service, my thoughts are that as the bayonet is May, 1918, it was issued to South African troops in Europe in 1918, then collected back at the end of the war, and the mark cancelled in 1922.

I don't yet have a grasp of quite how these 're-issue' marks work in terms of issue to new units, repair in same unit, or put into storage. For this example, is the time-line thus:

1918 - issue to South African unit

1922 - bayonet checked over, mark cancelled, into storage

1933 - bayonet checked over, remained in storage

1938 - issued to 2nd battalion of North Staffordshire Regiment

And maybe as it's the 2nd battalion of the North Staffordshire Regiment:

September 1939 - landed in France with the British Expeditionary Force

1 June 1940 - evacuated from Dunkirk

Cheers,

Tony

The cancelled Union of South Africa mark is interesting.

The Union of South Africa came into being on 31st May 1910, so that particular mark could have been used as from that date.

LF

If any are painted, look close, without the flash mine is quite a bit harder to see...
