Guest bonza Posted 14 October , 2004 Share Posted 14 October , 2004 (edited) G'day There were special listings of Officers & Crews who, although serving on Merchant vessels, had made themselves available to the Admiralty in time of hostilities. Merchantmen under the command of a Reserve Captain were entitled to fly a Blue Duster in place of the Red Duster. Allocation to Naval ships during wartime was not automatic, and many continued to serve in the Merchant Marine, which often carried a higher risk factor. This link might help RANER Betcha never heard of the R.A.N.E.R Pat OK Have now read "Stonecrop". The pieces do fit Edited 15 October , 2004 by bonza
larneman Posted 15 October , 2004 Author Share Posted 15 October , 2004 Thanks for the information. You were right as I never had seen anything about the "RANER" before but then I had never seen anything about "RNNSR" either. I now assume that there are 100's more out there and if the Fallen from Larne did not serve in them then they will remain a mystery to me. greetings from Hoogwoud, Holland Liam

larneman Posted 16 October , 2004 Author Share Posted 16 October , 2004 Hi Pat, It is the Royal Naval Nursing Service Reserve and like Members of Queen Alexandra's Royal Naval Nursing Service were entitled to the British War Medal 1914-1920. I am slowly getting bogged down in all these names made of letters...instead of doing research. Liam
Guest bonza Posted 16 October , 2004 Share Posted 16 October , 2004 (edited) G'day Liam Thanks! Maybe you should 'write' a book on the acronyms? Incidently the last book I read properly was Liam's War, enjoyed it! Good luck with your project ooRoo Pat Gee! nearly let a chance go by? Never heard of the RANER? Just like Mel Gibson's Melbourne Horse Cadets in "Gallipoli" They never got the recognition they deserve. Ever wondered why they christened him MEL?
