Remembered Today:

18 pdr shell transit crate markings

Grovetown

Recommended Posts

I've just taken possession of a long promised/ anticipated crate, for the transport of 18 pdr shells, of which pictures below.

As I know little of ordnance, first, I'd be really grateful if someone could explain/ interpret the markings on the crate.

Second, I'm intrigued by the date; as I can't recall having seen a British marking where the date is punctuated by commas before. Again, I'd be grateful if someone could confirm the practice - even if occasional - or were these supplied to nations adopting a more 'European' style?

Cheers,

GT.
