burlington Posted 14 October , 2004 Share Posted 14 October , 2004 I know this should really be under 'Utterly off-topic' but ..... The island of Vis is a small island off the coast of Croatia, some 2 hours ferry ride from Split. The town of Vis itself is in a bay and on one of the prometories is a British Cemetary. Tito operated from Vis during WW2 as did the British forces 1943-44. The cemetary comprises high walls with a padlocked wrought iron gateway. Inside there are 3 large unidentified mounds, an old memorial to the British dead from the Napoleonic Wars, and also a modern memorial, a photo of which is with this posting. The cemetary was damaged during WW2 and has been restored. The memorial is apparently visited every September and there are poppy crosses and wreathes at its' base. Anyone know anything more about this outpost?
paul guthrie Posted 14 October , 2004 Share Posted 14 October , 2004 There are many, many partisan memorials in the former Yugoslavia and quite a few in far N Italy, saw 1 near Asiago to WW2 British Commandos.
Captain Dave Posted 15 October , 2004 Share Posted 15 October , 2004 I find it interesting that it was erected after the fall of Communisim. I have read a bit in the past of Communist Officials attempting to deny the existance any assistance from the West.
