Kitchener's Bugle Posted 24 April , 2014 Share Posted 24 April , 2014 Clitheroe War Memorial Lancashire. The memorial can be found in the castle park near the Museum, just in front of the castle. In 1920 the castle and surrounding park was bought by the people of Clitheroe by subscription and declared a memorial to the men who had lost their lives in the Great War. Later a cenotaph was built in the newly created Garden of Remembrance and unveiled in 1923. Images taken recently ny myself.
Mark Hone Posted 25 April , 2014 Share Posted 25 April , 2014 Great pictures. A beautiful memorial in a fantastic location overlooking the town. The story of its creation and dedication is told in the excellent Clitheroe Castle Museum nearby, well worth a visit.

rosewlsg Posted 18 November , 2014 Share Posted 18 November , 2014 Thanks for uploading the photos. It has answered a question for me regarding one of the men on the Singapore Cenotaph. Geoffrey Garnett Horsfall was from Clitheroe and I'm glad to see his name listed.

Quadey Posted 26 March , 2020 Share Posted 26 March , 2020 Great pics of my home town Memorial, thank you for posting. Here are a few more. I'm currently doing a write up about Clitheroe Company, 1/4th East Lancashire Regiment and particularly their service in Gallipoli. I have asked my fellow Townspeople about it and nobody knows anything about it, which appals me and I intend to rectify that! The youngest British soldier killed in action at Gallipoli, Drummer Joseph Townsend, came from Clitheroe and he was part of Clitheroe Company, aged only 15.
