gem22 Posted 21 April , 2014 Author Share Posted 21 April , 2014 Jonathan Thanks for your interest. I'm preparing brief histories on the men of this parish who died in the Great War. Two had emigrated to Australia earlier in 1914. One served with 8 batt AIF and the other 792 Private WGM Theobald served and died with 14 batt AIF on 27 April. I've checked the Official Histories and Carlyon's Gallipoli but 14 batt gets little mention. I've managed to find service records for both men but not the war diaries so far. Graeme's link gives war diaries for Sept to Nov '14 inclusive but nothing for 1915. If you can help it would be great. Garth

moggs Posted 22 April , 2014 Share Posted 22 April , 2014 William Theobald 792 was originally in F company but when the companies merged in Egypt early 1915 he would have been put into B Company. They were at what was to be known as Quinn's Post on the 27th April. The Battalion had only just arrived at the firing end of the front that day where confusion was still a mainstay of the operations and, therefore, he was one of the first from the battalion to succumb to enemy fire. The Turks attacked from their trenches with machine guns and snipers. He doesn't get a mention in Wanliss' book on the battalion and there is scant information from those early days anyway. I will keep looking. Jonathan
gem22 Posted 22 April , 2014 Author Share Posted 22 April , 2014 Jonathan Thanks for your help but I don't want to take up too much of your time. Graeme put me straight on the war diaries and so if you have any other sources of information I would be glad of any help you can give.
