yellow Posted 15 April , 2014 Share Posted 15 April , 2014 On average, it is recognised that 3 months is the amount of time a recipient of the MM in the Great war had to wait before their name appeared in the London Gazette. Can anyone tell me the shortest time, ever recorded, from the day of the deed to the entry in the London Gazette?
FZ1 Posted 25 April , 2014 Share Posted 25 April , 2014 I don't have definite info on the shortest, but according to Howard Williamson's "Great War Medal Collectors Companion" the time varied between one month and nine months. Averages shown in this book are: 1916-17: 3 months 1917-18: 3-4 months 1918-19: 4-6 months 1919-20: 6-9 months Not a certainly, but its likely that the 1-month ones were in 1916. Howard's MM roll will doubtless have more info when published. Jon
FZ1 Posted 25 April , 2014 Share Posted 25 April , 2014 Just as a follow-up, Howard notes that the Gazette of 10 Aug 1916 has awards dated from 19 May 16 to 2 July 16, so I imagine that the 2 July ones are probably the quickest. Looking down the list of other Gazette entries, they seem to lengthen as the war goes on. Jon
yellow Posted 1 May , 2014 Author Share Posted 1 May , 2014 Thank you for the reply Jon. Most informative. So one month is 'probably' the shortest amount of time for the first awards of the MM. Thank you.
