I came across this page with many old postcards of the Brtish army passing through Boulogne during WW1.

Doesn't that hill up and out of Boulogne (from the docks) look daunting? You can see the effort the men are making to march up it. If only the photos could give an impression of how long it is.

Yes, I know that long, straight road down into Boulogne. Must have been a terrible haul on foot with all that kit.
