Remembered Today:

What to do with a day on the Somme?

Last week there were a couple of spent shell cases and some bullets on either side of the track leading up to the windmill (post #20 above) but, interestingly, no shrapnel despite both fields being recently ploughed.  By contrast, there was plenty near High Wood.

Thanks very much for your reply. We will do as you say and let you know how it went.  The highlights of our 90s tour (96) was going to sunken lane (The Malins one) and the Devonshire regiment cemetery.  The Devonshires hold this trench, The Devonshires hold it still.  I cant think of anything more moving or powerful ever written in regards the Great War. With technology the way it is we can immerse ourselves even more in the atmosphere of the Somme.
