Terry Carter Posted 30 March , 2014 Share Posted 30 March , 2014 Picked up this shell case last year and I was wondering if any member could identify it. The main shell case diameter is 80mm and the bottom flange is 90 mm diameter not an expert but is seems to be like mild steel casing Terry
centurion Posted 30 March , 2014 Share Posted 30 March , 2014 Cartridge case and yes the Germans did use steel cartridge cases as they were short of copper to make brass ones
centurion Posted 30 March , 2014 Share Posted 30 March , 2014 Steel cases were used by the Germans in artillery from 1917 onwards and much more in WW2 than WW1 so this case probably came from either the 2nd Battle of the Somme 1918 or the 3rd Battle of the Somme 1940
