Lee Enfield 303

A friend of mine has a Lee Enfield pre the SMLE.

The number on it is 10246

Can anyone give me any information on it or date range?

Does it have a prefix letter?I will also need to know the manufacturer.

When you say pre the SMLE do you mean it is a Magazine Lee Enfield? (aka Long or Charger Loading Lee-Enfield)

The quickest way to tell the date would be to look on the wrist as it will be stamped there!

The usual arrangement looks like this: (This is an SMLE)

Royal Cypher (this one is E for Edward)

over

Manufacturer (this one is BSA)

over

Year (this one is 1907)

over

Model (This is a Sht LE MkIII)

Very little can be told about an individual rifle's service history without full provenance which is almost never available.

If your friends rifle does not have this form of marking it is probably a commercial variant but even those usually have a maker (eg BSA Co) stamped there

This is an MLE wrist

and this is a commercial rifle (but one which saw NZ service)
