hen190782 Posted 14 March , 2014 Share Posted 14 March , 2014 Good Afternoon The CWGC entry for this man (http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/117178/SHERMAN,%20WILLIAM) records that he had served in the South African Campaign, 1901-2. I would be grateful if anyone can identify the medal ribbons in this newspaper photograph: Thanks Nigel

hen190782 Posted 14 March , 2014 Author Share Posted 14 March , 2014 Sorry not familiar with abbreviations - are these Queen's South Africa medal and King's South Africa medal? Would these be service medals? To my eyes, it looks like there are three clasps on first medal and two on second. I realise that the quality is not great as it comes from newspaper but any help is appreciated. Nigel
Admin spof Posted 14 March , 2014 Admin Share Posted 14 March , 2014 Nigel Yes. Queen's and King's South Africa Medals. Each one had clasps for the different actions during the war. There were plans do the same for the Great War but they were shelved. I can't even begin to imagine the administrative nightmare that would have been given how hard it was just to get up to three medals issued to over 5 million men! The SA medal rolls are on Ancestry under the UK Campaign Medal and Award Roll http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=1686 Glen
hen190782 Posted 14 March , 2014 Author Share Posted 14 March , 2014 Glen Thanks, there are several men called W Sherman for South Africa Campaign but I think that I have managed to narrow it down to two men ... one RAMC and one 8th QRIH Nigel
