Anneca Posted 13 March , 2014 Share Posted 13 March , 2014 Today The National Archives is making the second batch of 3,987 digitised First World War Unit War Diaries from France and Flanders available online via its First World War 100 portal. It contains records relating to the last of the Cavalry and numbers 8-33 Infantry Divisions deployed to the Western Front in the First World War. They cover the entire period of the units' involvement in France and Belgium, from their arrival on the front to their departure at the end of the war. William Spencer, author and military records specialist at The National Archives said: 'This second batch of unit war diaries provides detailed accounts of the actions of the next troops to arrive on the Western Front. They show the advances in technology that made it the world's first industrialised war with many mounted troops going into battle at first with swords on horseback and ending the war with machine guns and tanks.' http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/first-world-war/ Anne
GraemeClarke Posted 14 March , 2014 Share Posted 14 March , 2014 Hi It has happened to me but never for that length of time. What I usually do is copy and paste the address at the top of the page into a NEW page. Eventually one of them opens whilst the other just keeps going. Regards, Graeme
Sunnylew75 Posted 14 March , 2014 Share Posted 14 March , 2014 Hi Graeme, Sorry, I deleted my post without refreshing and didn't see your reply. I think it was a problem with the proxies at work. It works fine now I'm home. Serves me right for downloading diaries at work, but all of the ones I'm interested in showed up all at once and ..... Admin spof Posted 14 March , 2014 Admin Share Posted 14 March , 2014 I've had that problem too when on-site at Kew. The "preparing" stage works but sometimes the TNA internet security gateway is unable to process the file and the download never starts. I think it is the demand, particularly during the daytime, overloading the system. At least when paying you get a link valid for 30 days and can try later. Roger Thompson Posted 14 March , 2014 Share Posted 14 March , 2014 Truly amazing I got my granddads Battalions war diary after paying the fee in 1 minute 32 seconds. The other one was quick a well but would not download properly, so closed it down and went back to it later and everything happened as quick as my granddads. I am one highly satisfied fella. Cheers Roger t'other one.
