South Africa Medals

Hi all

Sorry this is a bit of topic but couldnt think of anywhere else to look. Someone I know has thre medals - South African King and Queens and Imperial long service medal.I havent seen them but on them is written

A.S.Q SGT. JOHN B SELBY 21 LANCERS

HINDOOSTAN,LEICESTERSHIRE

SOUTH AFRICA 1901-02 ORANGE FREE STATE.

I'm a bit confused why Hidoostan and South Africa would be on the same medals.

Would A.S.Q.Sgt stand for Acting Squadron Quartermaster Sgt.

Any help greatly appreciated

Mick,

It sounds as though some wires are crossed somewhere - the "Hindoostan, Leicestershire" bit sounds like a Leicestershire Regiment capbadge - a tiger with "Hindoostan" over and "Leicestershire" under - certainly nothing to do with the three medals. "South Africa 1901", "South Africa 1902" and "Orange Free State" are clasps for the Queen's and King's South Africa medals - Orange Free State belongs with the Queen's and the other two are usually on the King's but can be on the Queen's if the King's medal wasn't awarded.

hi Stuart

thanks for that, the Hindoostan ,Leicestershire bit made me think of the cap badge as well. I'll ask a few more questions about them.
