Doug504 Posted 25 February , 2014 Share Posted 25 February , 2014 Just found out this afternoon our application for a Heritage Lottery fund grant to assist with the funding of our annual school trip to the Somme Battlefields has been successful. This ensures that for the next 3 years our major costs re: transport and accommodation are covered. I would recommend others with similar funding issues apply for a grant, the application is not too difficult. This ensures we can offer the service of locating the graves /memorials of local residents relatives and photographing them for the families. The link below shows previous years trips. http://www.cwgc.org/media/40004/springwell_dene_school_trips_to_somme_battlefields_-_cwgc.pdf Doug. DaveBrigg Posted 26 February , 2014 Share Posted 26 February , 2014 Congratulations. We've just come back from a similar trip and it had a real sense of purpose; sometimes students benefit from having something to do, rather than spending a significant amount of the tour just sitting on a coach listening to a guide. Yes, we've always found the students to be engaged to a much greater extent by working in this manner. as they meet the relatives of casualties prior to the visit it bring the reality of the impact of war home to them. It never ceases to amaze me how even after this time period how families still remember their relatives The gratitude to the students when they bring back photographs and / or place a message on the grave for them forges links between the generations which are long lasting.
