StuartAB Posted 24 February , 2014 Share Posted 24 February , 2014 C E Montague, assistant editor of the Manchester Guardian, famously dyed his hair to ensure acceptance when he enlisted in December 1914 at the age of 47. Please can someone tell me the upper age limit at the time? I know it was initially 30, raised to 35 at the end of August, but have been unable to find details of any later increases, if any. Thanks, Stuart.
Retlaw Posted 24 February , 2014 Share Posted 24 February , 2014 In my files from Slater to Sykes, which I am working on at the moment, there are 6 men over the age of 35, two are 40 & over 4 of them didn't survive. By 1918 they were calling up men age 45, possibly to release younger men for the front.
StuartAB Posted 25 February , 2014 Author Share Posted 25 February , 2014 Thanks! But surely it wasn't 45 in December 1914? Stuart
